Here's The Happenings: |
Science: We began our week with exploring lenses and eye structures! On Thursday the class dissected sheep eyes; a practice round before the dissect with 3rd grade next week. Our first official unit of the semester will be astronomy. We will begin reviewing our solar system next week, and dive deeper in our understanding of the sun and moon.
Homework Due 1/14: Astronomy Video Assignment
Math: Chapter 3- Graphing Linear Functions Transformations with functions will reappear for your student in multiple HS classes, so I want to make sure they have a good foundation of this information. To try to ensure this, I have done a lot of reteaching and explaining the different transformations this week. We will continue with this practice next week with our shrinks and stretches as well as practicing transformations with absolute value. We will test on this topic again, January 14th.
Homework: none :)
Social Studies: Students will be learning about Mesopotamia and the ancient civilizations, as well as the Middle East Crisis, including the Suez Canal and Israel Palestine conflict. |

English: Our 8th graders are continuing their study of Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass. As they read, students are gaining a deeper understanding of Douglass’s experiences, his fight for freedom, and the historical context of slavery in America. This powerful autobiography not only highlights Douglass’s resilience but also encourages critical thinking about themes such as justice, equality, and perseverance. Ask your student what part of Douglass’s story has impacted them the most—it’s a great way to connect and reflect on these important lessons together!
Writing & Research: This week in Writing and Research, students began by discussing their academic goals for the semester. We then focused on elevating their writing by incorporating a variety of transition words to improve flow and clarity. Moving forward, this class will continue to strengthen students’ writing skills through structured practice, research-based assignments, and lessons on new grammar concepts. Encourage your child to share some of the transition words they’ve learned and how they plan to use them in their writing! |
